Wisdom Teeth Removal in Indianapolis

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the teeth at the back of your mouth (the third molar
teeth). They are adult teeth that erupt in your late teens or twenties.
By this time you already have a mouthful and because of the space
limitations, your wisdom teeth may fail to emerge, may emerge partially
or at an angle. These are known as impacted wisdom teeth. Due to their
failed eruption, they may cause you problems. Some of them are mentioned
below:

  • Pain when chewing or opening the mouth

  • Bad odor because of trapped food and debris

  • Gum disease (periodontal disease)

  • Damage to the cheek

  • Tooth decay in partially emerged wisdom teeth

  • Damage to a nearby tooth or surrounding bone if the wisdom teeth
    emerge at an angle

  • Development of a fluid-filled sac (cyst) around the wisdom
    tooth

  • Complications with orthodontic treatments to straighten other
    teeth

How wisdom teeth are removed

If your wisdom teeth are badly positioned, they may cause you serious
problems. The most common treatment for impacted teeth is complete
extraction even though sometimes only the crown is removed.

To remove your impacted wisdom teeth, your dentist will perform an
X-ray to get images of how your wisdom teeth are positioned under the
gums.

If they require a simple extraction your dentist will remove them
with forceps after loosening them from their socket.

If they require a surgical extraction your dentist may refer you to
an endodontist or an oral surgeon who is more specialized in high-risk
procedures.

During extraction, you will be given a local anesthetic injection to
numb the area and sedation is sometimes required if you have high levels
of dental anxiety.

The tooth may be pulled out all at once using forceps or it may be
split into pieces first.

If you have impacted wisdom teeth, don’t put up with the pain and
discomfort. You may call an emergency dentist if your pain is severe.
