Cracked/Fractured Tooth
There are different types of tooth fractures. Some of them are small
and can easily be repaired. Others are big and can even lead to tooth
extraction. Cracks can occur from accidents, biting hard foods, opening
bottles using your teeth, or even wearing very large fillings.
Types of tooth fractures
Very small fractures
These are fractures that affect the enamel only. They are small but
they do need to be checked by your dentist.
Fractured Cusp
They occur on a dental filling without reaching the pulp.
Full-length cracks
These fractures affect the full length of the tooth but have not
reached the gum line.
Split tooth
These are fractures that cause the tooth to split in two.
Vertical cracks
Vertical cracks start under the gum line moving upwards.
Treatment is determined by the severity of the crack. Our dentists
can use composite resin to fill in the crack or dental crown to cover
the tooth if the crack is small and has not reached the gum line. For
larger cracks, a root canal may be done, but in some cases tooth
extraction is necessary. Do not live with a cracked tooth. Seek help at
